You need to decide on your Variant Axes - these are the properties according to which the products in the group vary.
Variant Axes are Custom Attributes, so you will need to have set up Custom Attributes for the properties that you want to vary - like size or colour. If you haven’t already, go to Custom Attributes and create new attributes for your variant properties. Obviously you’ll also need to assign values for these attributes on the products that are going to go into the variant group.
Once you have your Custom Attributes set up, you can select as many as you want to act as Variant Axes.
The most common scenario is probably a single Variant Axis but clothes and shoes might often vary by size and colour at the same time, which would require both attributes to be axes. Don’t go too crazy, we think 3 is about the maximum number of axes you’ll want to use.
Also remember that variant groups are to do with how products are displayed on your site, so it’s up to you to choose the best attributes to act as variant axes. Sometimes the choice is not obvious: for example, if you sell T-Shirts that vary by colour and size, you could pack both into a variant group, or you could only use size as a variant attribute and leave colour out so that each colour T-Shirt is presented ‘separately’ on your site.
