You might want to give your customers the option to signup to general email marketing, like a newsletter or regular offers. In order to be compliant with privacy, GDPR and other regulations, this option needs to be a *hard opt in**, which means that the customer must explicitly check the box to be opted in.
Configure this option on Website > General Settings > Checkout and Signup
`. Enable the option to show the checkbox on your checkout and customise the wording to say what the customer is signing up for.
If the customer checks the box, the subscribed
field will be set to true
on their account - this field can be used when transmitting the customer record to external email marketing platforms.
Important note: if you are using an external marketing platform, then the
opted in
field in Pakk will only be meaninfgul just after the customer signs up. Thereafter, any unsubscribes will be done via your marketing platform, so that will be the source of truth in the future.
This is, confusingly, a separate option and allows you to take advantage of some legal complexities that allow you to 'soft opt in' customers in certain circumstances. Broadly, those circumstances are:
They are conducting a transaction with you
You are opting them into communication about related products and services to those they are purchasing
You give them the option to refuse to be soft opted in
You can read more about these rules here:
Note: rules like these are liable to change with time and it's your responsibility to make sure your practices are legal and compliant
To enable soft opt in, go to Website > General Settings > Checkout and Signup
. You can also customise the wording. Remember that the checkbox that they will see will allow them to opt out, so the wording needs to be negative, e.g. "Don't send me related offers".
If the customer allows themselves to be soft opted in, this will set the soft opted in
field on the order to true. Note that this is not set as customer level (as is the case with the general Subscribed
) field, because soft-opt ins relate directly to goods and services purchased.
